help2kids Tanzania, Children’s Home: Provide Food for One Month
Project cost: $1230
At the help2kids Children’s Home, our dedicated staff of caregivers work hard to ensure the children receive hearty, nutritious meals to fuel them throughout the day and give them the energy they need to learn, grow, and thrive. Each week, Mama Leah, the Children’s Home Manager, heads to the local market to stock up on rice, flour, beans, and other staple dry foods. Twice a week, a local vendor brings her homegrown produce to the Children’s Home where our head cook, Mama Anna, selects the freshest fruits and vegetables that make up the ingredients in her delicious, traditional Tanzanian meals. Some favorites include rice and peas served in a creamy tomato and coconut milk sauce and flavorful slow-cooked beans served over rice accompanied by fresh salad.
USD 1,230 provides nutritious meals for all the children and staff of the help2kids Children’s Home. The children start their day with a hearty porridge before heading to school, and always have fresh fruit as an after school snack, dinner is a healthy mix of vegetables, protein, and rice or ugali (a maize-based local favorite). The food budget also accommodates our children with special dietary needs that require them to keep higher calorie diets or supplement their regular meals with additional servings of fruit or vegetables. The kids often enjoy helping the mamas cook and learn about cooking and healthy eating.
