As a former volunteer and medical student, I would like to encourage as many people as possible to help the Health Clinic in Malawi. Newborns are the ones that need our help the most because the resources and reserves of their body in case of illness are very limited. An estimated 29% of Malawi’s mothers give birth without the supervision of a skilled birth attendant, and often the delivery takes place at home. This practice, in part, results in 1 in 36 women dying in childbirth during their lifetime and a neonatal mortality rate of 24 per 1,000 births. Sometimes women choose not to deliver at the health centre because the distance is too far and they must arrange difficult logistics like a guardian to accompany them and food for their time. Providing an incentive for these mothers to deliver at the health centre would go a long way towards improving the health of mothers and babies.

For USD 490, we can provide Healthy Baby Kits to ten mothers. These kits contain soya flour, cooking oil, and beans for the breastfeeding mother, and reusable cloth nappies and wrapping cloth for the baby. By providing these kits, you’re helping mothers make the difficult but often safer choice, to deliver their babies at the health centre.
